The meaning of flowers and ribbons in Ukrainian wreaths
WEAVING THE UKRAINIAN TRADITIONAL WREATH. SELECTION OF FLOWERS IN A WREATH AND THEIR QUANTITY.
Nowadays, you can buy a Ukrainian wreath and you will surely find a great abundance of handmade wreaths with various flowers in their composition. But in ancient times, the girls themselves wove their own wreaths and it should be noted that the weaving of Ukrainian traditional wreaths is a kind of peculiar science. You need to know when and from which flowers to weave, as well as which herbs you can intertwine next to.
For our ancestors, weaving a Ukrainian wreath was not a simple fun game, according to their ideas, it was important to know not only what flowers to choose for a wreath, but also how many of these flowers should be taken for a Ukrainian wreath. It is also important what time of day and for what purpose the wreath is woven.
The Ukrainian traditional wreath was woven from twelve flowers, and each flower, of course, has its own symbolic and healing meaning. The choice of flowers and their quantity for a wreath were not standard, everything depended on different circumstances, as well as on age – for a girl, girl or woman, it is woven. Each type of wreath also had its own purpose.
The main colors for weaving Ukrainian wreaths were: Chamomile, cornflower, poppy, ruzha, viburnum, hops, lovage, periwinkle, yarrow, immortelle. Also, as additional flowers, a lot of different herbs and flowers were used, some of them – cherry blossom, apple blossom, thyme, sweet clover, mint, oregano, wormwood, elecampane, primrose, snowdrop, heather, lily, chicory, fern, snowdrop . It is difficult to enumerate all the flowers and herbs in full, because each region of Ukraine had its own traditions and rituals.
FLOWERS IN UKRAINIAN WREATH FOR A GIRL
In our native Ukraine, they love to compose and sing songs. Most Ukrainian songs are about great love, happiness and Ukrainian flowers. Flowers grow everywhere – at home, in flower beds and on window sills in offices. Flowers are embroidered on wedding towels, they are used to decorate stoves and decorate the walls of the house. They are like a symbol of the sincerity of the soul and great kindness. It is believed that floral embroidery on the sleeves of a shirt can protect the owner from evil eyes and diseases. Of course, flowers are the basis of the Ukrainian traditional wreath.
In total, there are twelve main flowers in the Ukrainian wreath, and each flower is a talisman. The following are woven into the wreath: mallow, viburnum, chamomile, immortelle, yarrow, periwinkle, forget-me-not, marigolds, lovage, cornflower, red poppy and hops.
What do the flowers in the Ukrainian wreath symbolize:
Immortelle – a symbol of health
Lovage and cornflower – devotion, fidelity and beauty
Yarrow – disobedience
Periwinkle – the life and immortality of the human soul
Chamomile – a symbol of girlish purity and fidelity
Cherry and apple blossoms are a symbol of maternal devotion
Kalina – a symbol of girlish beauty
Poppy is a symbol of sadness and sadness.
Rouge, mallow and peony – faith, hope and love
Hops (antennae) – a symbol of flexibility and intelligence
Millennium has the most important place among all tsets. Its small white flowers form a large flower when viewed from a distance and are popularly called a tree. When the yarrow flowers fade, the wind spreads their seeds everywhere, and wherever this plant then sprouted, it always pleases with its color. Therefore, the girls weave the yarrow into the Ukrainian wreath, as a symbol of endurance and disobedience.
Chamomile brings health, kindness and great tenderness. Chamomile is intertwined with clusters of red viburnum, with curly tendrils of hops, which symbolize the flexibility of the mind. Chamomile has been loved and respected since ancient times, it is sung in Ukrainian legends and songs. Guys are often compared to hops.
Kalina is one of the strong symbols of Ukraine, so its fruits are often used to weave Ukrainian wreaths. Also, clusters of red viburnum are often embroidered on women’s clothing and they always symbolize youth and beauty.
Cornflowers of soft blue color are braided into a wreath as a symbol of modesty, beauty and tenderness, strength and health. In a Ukrainian wreath, cornflower and lovage are intertwined side by side.
Immortelle in a wreath symbolizes health, it helps against many diseases, although it looks very modest. Girls add poppy color to a wreath if someone in their families died fighting the enemy. Wheat ears are woven into the Ukrainian wreath for goodness and generosity. Periwinkle, is an evergreen plant and is considered a symbol of fidelity.
The sunflower is a symbol of labor, wealth, strength and success, and the sunflower is also considered the strongest and strongest among flowers.
All flowers, regardless of whether they are strong or fragile, are important and necessary for people. Our ancestors idolized all flowers and believed that God gave people this miracle of nature.
RIBBONS IN UKRAINIAN WREATH
In addition to flowers, Ukrainian wreaths were also decorated with multi-colored satin ribbons, following certain folk rules. People really believed in the power of ribbons, because they protected the girl’s hair from evil eyes. The length of the ribbons was not arbitrary, because they were measured along the length of the girl’s braid and cut a little lower to completely cover it. Each color of the ribbons in the Ukrainian wreath had its own special meaning.
Also, each girl had to know in what sequence to weave the ribbons into the Ukrainian traditional wreath and what the color of each ribbon means. And that girl who did not know which ribbon should be woven after which was very ashamed in ancient times.
The very first ribbon in the Ukrainian wreath was woven in the middle – a ribbon of light brown color, which symbolizes the land-nurse. Yellow ribbons are knitted on both sides of the brown ribbon – a symbol of the sun. Further, the yellow ribbons are followed by light green ones – a symbol of girlish youth and beauty. Then a line of blue and blue ribbons – symbols of water and clear sky, which give strength and good health to the owner of the wreath. After the blue ribbons, orange ribbons are knitted – a symbol of bread and purple – a symbol of human wisdom. It is also very important that there are crimson ribbons in the wreath – a symbol of sincerity, sincerity, and pink ones – a symbol of prosperity.
In addition to the multi-colored ribbons listed above, a white ribbon was also woven into the wreath, and its ends were to be embroidered with silver and gold threads. The sun was embroidered on the left end of the ribbon, and the moon was embroidered on the right end. If the white ribbon was not embroidered, then it was not taken into a wreath, since a white ribbon without embroidery is a symbol of memory of deceased ancestors.
According to folk traditions, if a girl was an orphan, then she braided blue ribbons into her braid and people knew this. And when people met an orphan, they gave her bread, clothes and fabrics, money and various gifts. Also, orphan girls were wished happiness and wealth, and childless people asked them to become their own daughter.
